A thriving business in brothels in early California grew as more and more men journeyed to San Francisco in search of gold. Along with that burgeoning industry were the famous brothels along the Barbary Coast that also exploded to service the men.

A wide range of opportunities characterized the business of prostitution, in a wide-open setting where there were neither Family Research Councils, local unions, nor an established social context. Some women were disempowered, remaining in the lower echelons as they worked in the hastily constructed cribs…
